PHUKET Governor, Dr Preecha Ruangjan, is leaving the island after serving only four months and 22 days as Governor. Dr Preecha has been posted to Phitsanulok province and will be replaced by Wichai Praisa-Ngob, who is currently the Governor of Singburi province. The shake-up is part of a nationwide reshuffle of Thailand’s 76 provincial governors by the recently empowered government under Abhisit Vejjajiva.

TEN Kamala students have been busy shooting each other with imported American cameras. The children, who are all orphans aged between 12 and 14, were snapping up new skills from visiting Wyoming photographer Marsha Lutz, during a week of photo-fun. The apprentice paparazzis are students at the prestigious H.M the King’s Rachaprachanakroh foundation school, which caters for more than 700 underprivileged mostly-Muslim students.

YACHTING legend Rolly Tasker will never forget the day Prince Charles hitched a ride on his racing boat. “We were lining up off Cowes for the Queen Victoria Cup in 1979, when one of the crew called out to ask me if I was prepared to take a passenger,” he said. “He said ‘Prince Charles is on the radio and he says wants to bum a ride on your boat’.
MORE than 50 yachts from around the world will line up for the start of this year’s Phang Nga Bay regatta which starts on Tuesday. The fleet will spend four days racing from Phang Nga Bay, first to Laem Sak, then to Koh Yao Noi, to Railay Bay in Krabi, and finally back to Phuket. A new race course has been set for this year’s event which will sail through the Koh Hong islands.

OVER the past 12 months, most foreign currencies have collapsed against the Thai baht, which means money from home is not worth as much as it was. A year ago, one Australian dollar would have bought you almost 35 baht. Today you would be lucky to get 22 or 23 baht.
THE Tourism Authority of Thailand has unleashed a new weapon in its bid to win back the tourists. Singapore has the Singapore Sling, America has the Manhattan and the Long Island Tea, and Cuba has it’s Cuba Libre. And now Thailand has its own tipple, the Siam Sunray.

SPIKE Wilson took up parachuting just after his eighteenth birthday. He jumped twice and was looking forward to the adrenalin rush as the light aircraft took him, two instructors, and a cameraman, skyward for his third jump. After climbing to 10,000 feet the signal was given to jump.

THE bright orange building stands out from its neighbours in the line of shops in Kathu. But it’s not the colour which makes Holland House special, it’s the dozens of children who welcome you with their shouts of ‘farang, farang’. Holland House is a small orphanage set up by Child watch Phuket to care for 20 orphans and kids who, for many reasons, can’t be cared for at home.

The KanEang@pier restaurant next to Chalong Pier is a major Phuket landmark ... and it’s about to get even bigger. Executive director, Wallee Pachantabutr, said the company name, Kan Eang, which means ‘feel at ease’, had been owned by the family for more than 30 years. “My husband started the first Kan Eang restaurant in 1977, and word of mouth about the seaside dining and the good food quickly spread to the locals,” she said.

IT’S always a buzz to discover a new restaurant, to be the first on your block to savor a complete new set of culinary delights. And Acqua, which overlooks Kalim Bay, is a real ‘discovery’. Although it has only been open a month, discerning diners from all over the world are already flocking in for a taste of owner Alessandro Frau’s fantastic fare.
Water festival could be a dry event

NEXT month’s Songkran festival look set to be a dry affair, at least for the locals. There will be plenty of water thrown about, but alcohol sales are likely to be banned during the three-day annual carnival. But, according to senior government officials, the proposed ban will probably only apply to Thais.

More and more farangs want to work here

THE number of foreigners applying for permission to work in Phuket has increased over the past 12 months. Most of the applications have come from people involved in the diving and hotel businesses. According to figures released by Phuket’s Provincial Employment Office, 8555 work permits were issued to foreigners in January this year compared to 7846 in January last year.
Local businesses and residents are concerned over a new monkey tourist attraction

LOCAL business people, residents and environmentalists have objected to plans to develop the Monkeyland tourist attraction on Tanan Island, off Chalong pier. Their concerns were raised at a special conference hosted by the Phuket Governor’s Office and the Department of Special Investigation at the Royal Phuket City Hotel on November 3. The conference was chaired by Phuket Governor Smith Palawatvichai, and Tavee Saudklaung, the president of the DSI.

THE Roseberry New Age Centre, near Surin Beach on the west coast of Phuket is something quite different, and dare I say it, very special. As you walk in the door, bells chime and you notice the aroma of highly concentrated essential oils. You will be entranced by the variety of nick-nacks, self-help books, crystals, angel cards and new age products including creams, oils and lotions.
The only legal way for a foreigner to own real estate in Thailand is to buy a condominium, or ‘condo unit’. In Bangkok, condo unit purchases are now considered trendy among the younger generation of Thais because condominiums are often conveniently located in the inner city area, making it more economical for them to commute to work.

PHUKET International Hospital is about to enter the second phase of an aggressive marketing campaign aimed at bringing more Australians to the island for cosmetic surgery. The hospital has joined forces with Australian specialist travel agent, Destiny Meditravel, to create travel and treatment packages which dozens of Australians have signed up for since the first phase of the program was launched early last year.
